Love him or hate him, Ricky Gervais has done something good in bringing the Atheist conversation to the mainstream.

I don't agree that he wasn't mocking the believers with his comments at the Golden Globes: "Thank you to god for making me an Atheist."

Thanking an entity - that you clearly don't believe in - would fall under the category of "mocking," in my humble opinion...

Nonetheless, I agree with the sentiment that it is just as offensive to an Atheist to have to listen to believers that are always thanking god.

I wouldn't call myself an Athiest, because I am more than the opposite of something...

I think that Ricky Gervais MAY have set back the Atheist movement by attacking these folks and their personal lives...and THEN affiliating himself and (ipso facto) his behavior with Atheism.

I stumbled across a christian blog today.

I wasn't looking to negate christianity, per se...actually, I was surfing on the topic of the Beatles. While I was reading the particular post that I found, I was reminded about how (in the 60's) the christians burned Beatles records in reaction to John Lennon's infamous comments about the Beatles being "bigger than jesus christ."

Hell yeah, they are...and always will be! jesus never got applause like that!

After finishing the blog post, I realized that I was annoyed: Once again, a christian had found a new way to cherry pick something good (that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with christianity) for the sake of his own purposes: Using the Beatles popularity to get hits on his christian blog - I would never dream of such an evil thing... };)

To all christians: Mess with with your fairy tales all that you want, but (on behalf of many non-religious BEATLES fans throughout the world) please DO NOT associate the tomfoolery that you call religion with the greatest band to ever live!

There were good because they were talented - don't even dare to suggest that your christian god can take ANY credit for it.

If the Beatles were a christian act, fine...I could "LET IT BE" - but they weren't... and just because christian Rock is so god-awful (smirks), it doesn't give christians the right to come poaching into the Non-believers' turf whenever it suits them.

(On a side note, I still don't get how most christians use the word spirituality like it is a cheap euphemism for christianity - IT ISN'T! The word has become nothing more than a "closet christian's" way of still holding on to the brainwashing he/she received as a child because they don't possess the imagination to think of anything better! They use "spiritual" to define their beliefs because they realize how bat shit crazy you have to be to believe in the bible in this day and age of SCIENCE! It's become an embarrassment. Besides, muslims can be "spiritual" too...and yet all "true" christians still believe that all muslims are going to hell.)

Why don't christians come and claim Marilyn Manson while they are at it, if that is their game. There are MM songs that are not ONLY about the anti-christ! The Tibetan book of the dead (a Beatles influence) is surely just as offensive to most christians, no? Both go against the idea of a christian heaven.

If the christian god is so great, why didn't he/she/it make christian bands that were this good?? Not only that: Lest we forget - as the christian blog reminded me - that their god's disciples actually burned the vinyl of the Beatles because they were so threatened by this unholy yet still fantastic talent. Sounds more like the act of a cowardly Klansmen than a "good-natured christian," no?

Another quote from the christian blog:
"And believing that all true talent and creativity is a gift from god, I can even glorify god for the music of the Beatles. What I celebrate is not those moments when their lyrics promoted Eastern religion or seemingly advocated the use of drugs."

The Beatles were orgy-loving, pill-popping, weed-smoking, acid-dropping, hard-drinking rockers that were still able to clearly recognize that their music was more popular that jesus christ...and rightly so. I am quite confident that - if civilization/mankind ended tomorrow - and aliens came to Earth and discovered our culture - the bible would be buried fast and the Beatles records would be dusted off and treasured. You aren't a true Beatles fan if you don't (equally) like ALL of the talented material just because some of it goes against your "spirituality!"

...Besides, the christian blog made the point that "all talent comes from god"....am I to infer from this statement that god (then) ISN'T responsible for all the non-talented folks? I wonder then, who is responsible for all that crappy christian rock??! The Devil??? Oh, the irony!

Anyway - to be clear - I am deeply offended by christians that try to squirm their way into claiming the Beatles for their own needs. They should stick with their christian bands - they shouldn't try to make the Beatles "Circle" fit into their christian "Square."

What is a dew claw?

A dew claw is a claw that doesn't hit the ground with the rest of the claws when an animal walks. From fossil evidence, some dinosaurs had dew claws. Modern cats, wolves, and tigers have them also, in addition to the dogs that you referred to. And, while they are more commonly found on the front legs of dogs than on the back, some dogs do have them in both places. Sometimes the dew claws are firmly attached by bone to the rest of the skeleton; other times they are "floppy", and simply dangle from a connective tissue attachment.

What is the function of dew claws?

It is commonly agreed that they have NO function. They are vestigial
remnants of a fifth digit that were reduced in the process of Evolution.

Mastiffs often have DOUBLE front dew claws!

Standard Poodles have functional thumbs in the same evolved position/structure. They use them in steep terrain, and to grasp things.

To the god-fearing folks, I ask you the following:

Why would any supernatural creator go to such lengths for self-conscience-less beasts (sorry dog lovers!) that clearly do not have souls and surely won't make it to heaven nor hell any faster than a common mosquito would? Why wouldn't an all-knowing god put a little more effort into more important endeavors?

Even if ANY religion did represent the truth...and there IS a god, I wouldn't want to belong to this creator's club!

How do these dogs still procreate together when they are structurally/genetically different from each other? Humans can't do that, can we? Yeah some people are born with an odd amount of fingers or teeth...or maybe even the occasional tail! (I am only half joking!)

...but these examples are anomalies and are not structural/genetic traits that are consistently carried on from generation to generation.

There isn't a living demographic of humans that possess 4 fingers on each hand with inactive thumbs...but obviously, humans can't be our only area of study in regard to evolution!

The only logical explanation for this genetic distinction within the canine species (that I can imagine) is Evolution.

I am (mostly) thinking out loud here, so I would like to hear a better explanation, if you have it?

This is likely why it is not included with the rest of Jack T. Chick's work on his own website. The comic tract perfectly showcases how the Fundamentalists' belief in Jesus' word trumps their respect for the Law...and even plain common sense. Once again, Religion must adapt to attempt to stay relevant. This work is from some time after 1984!!

The biggest irony is that even Religion MUST 'evolve' to stay 'fit' enough to 'survive.' Incidentally, Jack T. Chick also believes that Evolution is nothing more than the handy work of Satan.

In 1864, "in god we trust" was added to all American coins. The same phrase was included on the dollar bill in 1957!!

Imagine if you scratched out (in ink) "in god we trust" on all of your paper money before you spent it.

If a lot of people actually did this, there would be three eventual effects:

1) It would tell anyone who sees the corrected money that a non-believer has exercized our nation's First Amendment right of free speech.

2) The money would no longer work in a coin changer and would have to be sent back to the Federal Reserve, the department which puts that offensive slogan on in the first place. Imagine what would happen if thousands of bills were returned every month from banks all over America. It's just possible that the folks in charge might come around and realize that it would be better if our money did not have this blatantly unrepresentative yarn on it in the first place.

3) You would know that you did something for your cause, even if it is not earth-shaking...

Obviously, this site implies a leaning toward the atheist's way of thinking over any faith-based religious person...but, we believe that there are issues with both belief systems, if we may... Here are the issues in a nutshell:

What is a belief?
The acceptance of a fact, opinion, or assertion as real or true.

What is truth?
Something consistent with fact or reality; not false or erroneous.

What is an atheist?
A lack of belief in gods and supernatural beings or perhaps, "godless."

The problem with the term "atheist" is illustrated in the definitions above. It essentially gives the "believers" the loophole to pounce on: Believing (100%) that there is no "god"...or what believing something to be "true," might imply.

It seems that being 100% sure, is a weak premise to go into this argument with, since nothing can be proven (yet) regarding the "god" vs. "no god" argument. Only HOPE for theories built on facts to create convincing arguments for or against "god(s)" seems plausible.

Because of this, atheists would have a better chance of arguing with the believers if they were to not refer to themselves as "atheists." When you act like you "know" that you are correct, you are eliminating ALL possibilities for error...the Atheist can't afford to do this until he/she comes up with 100% proof. Otherwise, he/she risks being guilty of exuding the same dogma that ALL faith-based people do. For example, most christians don't kinda believe what they believe, they "KNOW" it to be true.

In a world that we can't (truly) prove anything in (as with Nihilism), it is best to keep humble about this fraction of a percentage point that might allow for us to be incorrect.

By definition, "atheists" do not have this luxury and they risk arming the faith-based masses until proof arrives...

Evidence vs. Theories of Evidence.

Lee Patrick Strobel has wrote that there is no evidence for anything.
The Christian apologist helped to kill the thought process that allowed for Religious people's hearsay to masquerade as evidence - like it really needed any help!

Therefore, there is no real evidence available to either side in the "god" vs. "No god" debate...but there are theories of evidence, which are made up of facts, that we CAN prove - and THIS is ALL that we CAN possibly comprehend.

Theories of evidence are JUST as important: Otherwise, you would consider holding your hand over a flame until your hand is gone...and so could Strobel! But neither of you ever would do so: Because this mere "theory" is/was just TOO important to both of you.

Without SOME sense of a theory of evidence, you wouldn't have found this blog - Theories are obviously MUCH stronger than hearsay.

Nihilistic arguments and religious (faith-based) people can't co-exist...if they did, even "god" would cease to exist...and the Faithful couldn't have THAT now could they?! Therefore, due to this enormous self-contradiction, the faithful people shouldn't have the right to access nihilistic logic.

Besides, writing that there is "no evidence for ANYTHING" must "only" be a theory as well since you cannot prove or disprove that either!

Theories rule!

The gideons International distribute bibles all over the world. They don't do this to educate people about the Bible or even to provide bibles to those who otherwise can't afford to purchase one themselves. The purpose of the gideons is, in their own words, to "win men, women, boys and girls to a saving knowledge of the lord jesus christ." They exist solely to evangelize christianity and convert people to christianity. You can take a stand against the gideons when their actions break the law.

Your most likely encounter with gideon bibles will be in motels and hotels. Their presence certainly isn't illegal, but it does represent an unambiguous form of preferential treatment for christianity. It might not be so bad if religious scriptures from a variety of religions were provided on an equal basis, but thus far the only hotel chain to even try eventually succumbed to pressure from evangelical christians. As has been demonstrated in so many other cases, some christians can't handle even the slightest competition.

Things to do:

Request a bible-Free Room: Owners are expected to keep Bibles in every room, but if you ask for a bible-free room you can get one. This might sound petty since if you aren't interested in the bible you can just ignore it, but it's important to remember that hotels are unjustly assuming that guests would want a Bible in the first place. It's not petty to object to christian beliefs and christian scriptures being singled out for privileged treatment.

Why isn't the onus on christians to ask for a bible or to bring their own? By specifically requesting a bible-free room, you will be demonstrating to the owners that not everyone wants or even appreciates having a bible in their room. Perhaps if enough people do this in enough places, it will eventually make a difference and bibles will be something that you have to request.

If they won't remove the bible or you just forget to ask, there are other steps you can take that are just as effective or perhaps even more so.

Warning Stickers: There are, for example, warning stickers you can place in the Bible to send a message to future readers and perhaps make an impact on their thinking. There are also warning stickers about the gideons themselves. If you don't want to go so far as putting a sticker on the Bible, you can just leave a freethought bookmark in it.

Write a letter: Whatever happens, writing a formal letter to hotel management is a good idea. Your goal should be to explain to them that don't appreciate the company giving privileged treatment to christianity — not all their customers are christians, after all, and non-christians shouldn't be told like this that they aren't as important as christian customers.

By Mr. O'Reilly's logic, we should also present Scientology in our Science classrooms...and Islam...and Buddhism...and on and on...it makes me wonder: When will we have time for actual "SCIENCE" in the Science classroom with all of this talk of Religion?

Christopher Hitchens is aggressive with his argument against Theism and he likes it that way; it's hard to disagree with (yet another) #1 Best-selling Reasonist author. His book that he was promoting for this interview is "God is not Great."

I may be wrong, but I suspect that his "laughing at others' misfortune" comment was said with his tongue firmly in cheek...I think it is safe to say that he possesses what some might call a "devilish" sense of humor!!

Many Reasonists do a great job of breaking down the walls that protect faith in "god," but very few do it as well as Sam Harris.

Sam has made a point of not giving credence to the term "atheism." He argues (and I am paraphrasing) that putting an "a" in front of "theism" only gives theism, as a word and concept, more power. He also points out that there are no terms for branches of Science (the Reasonist's main weapon) that are simply named after whatever the opposite of the study in question is: Terms like "aphysics" or "apharmacy" come to mind...and these terms (without the "a" in front) are branches of Science that are actually based on proof!

Theism, on the other hand, cannot be proven as a valid belief system...and yet this term "atheism" has been adopted to stand for a (much more credible) disbelief in "god."

As a result, Sam Harris pleads to his like-minded brethren that we should not use this term nor any term, per se, so as to stay under the radar from attack by the opponents of Reasonism. This is one very tiny point of Sam's that we at theReasonists.com disagree with.

No great movement ever succeeded without a name...and if it did, how would you ever hear of it?!

So as a start toward a solution, we have created this site. Because this is a great movement that must aim toward the light of (everyone's) day.

Humans have evolved too far to stay locked in a mindset from a former time that cannot be proven to be valid. Admittedly, this mindset cannot be disproven either, but there is simply an overwhelming amount of a scientific evidence that lends itself toward...(insert drum roll here)..."Reasonism." We clearly didn't coin the term in this application of the word...but we will gladly adopt it for our purposes of spreading the concepts of Reason and Logic.

Glenn Beck and Mormonism.

This next video really does a great job of showing Beck's clarity on the subject at hand - his ability to misquote himself within seconds is rare! Yes Glenn, you CAN definitely learn something from someone..."Off the cuff!"

Notice the Fox News hosts squirming in the video. This taping led to Beck's show losing advertising endorsements.

Mr. Beck is a Mormon...a converted Mormon, no less! Mormons indisputably believed that all "Blacks" were here (on Earth) to represent Satan up until 1978...almost the 80's!! It's a good thing that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video didn't come out a few years earlier huh? There would have been HELL TO PAY! Incidentally, just a few decades later, Michael Jackson's THRILLER VIDEO (from 1983) has been chosen to become the first music video that will be inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress of the US. Wow!! The Mormons were only off by about 5 or 6 years!

The Mormons clearly changed their stance on this point (that "Blacks" are Satan's Earthly representatives) under the pressures of political correctness. It is very telling when a Mormon can make comments about another (the President, in this case) like the following:

* "Obama Has A Deep-Seated Hatred For White People."
* "This guy is, I believe, a racist."

In a separate "incident," this lady goes on to explain that she believes that EVERYTHING in the Bible is true; it has obviously influenced her deeply. It's an incredibly ironic argument: The seemingly "moderate" Christians (in comparison) are angry with her because she is investing more - and specifically, more literally - into the Bible than they do.

I do not think that she will be on Fox News too many more times! (Then again...this is FOX NEWS that we are taking about.) We are not promoting hate by posting these clips. Our purpose is to merely show an example that illustrates the power/effect(s) of the Bible when in the "wrongest" of hands.
